| University of Latvia (earlier Latvian State University) was one of the first
universities in the former Soviet Union where since 1968 a course on demography
is taught for students of different specialities (for economists, geographers,
sociologists). Since 1997/98 academic year demography is a core subject for
all undergraduate students of economic and sociological studies. At the University the students acquire demographic themes also in general statistics, social statistics, population geography courses and in various courses of sociology. In addition, the following graduate courses in population studies are offered through the Department of Statistics and Demography and Department of Human geography (analytic demography, population statistics, fertility and family planning, population policy and programmes, population projections, population and settlements in Baltic States (Latvia), research methods in population geography, cartography of population and settlements, etc.) A number of population study courses are included in study programmes of Academy of Social Work and Social Pedagogics "Attistiba" ("Development") and Medical Academy of Latvia (see Table) as well as in some other institutions of higher education (such as Latvian University of Agriculture, etc). The School of Public Health of Medical Academy of Latvia has a post graduate education and training in public health. Some themes are devoted to demography.
